From print-receptive coatings for digital printing to low-migration laminating adhesives, Ashland delivers innovative solutions to the adhesives and coatings market

BARCELONA, Spain - The narrow-web printing market is growing swiftly - and more complex. Market disruptions such as short-run packaging and new food packaging regulations call for low-migration products. Flexible packaging represents a huge opportunity for label makers. Digital printing meets many of the demands, but comes with challenging requirements for the adhesives and coatings.

For Ashland Performance Materials, a commercial unit of Ashland Inc. (NYSE:ASH), the opportunity is clear - innovation drives growth. "Digital printing is growing, and so is the demand for print-receptive coatings that can deliver superb ink adhesion and a quick-dry formulation to speed processing for label printers," said Stuart May, business director adhesives and coatings, Ashland Performance Materials. "Ashland is designing new PureKote™ print receptive coatings products based on in-house chemistries to answer those needs."

Low migration laminating adhesives and coatings
In addition, Ashland is developing improved performance PureRad™ low migration laminating adhesives and coatings as an answer to the industry's increased focus on short-run packaging and food safety.

"Ashland's unique offering consists of much more than just our high-performance PureRad products," explained May. "We can offer our customers extensive support in testing through our labs, analytical department, regulatory managers and toxicologists - an especially valuable source for label printers entering the food packaging market."

Overprint varnishes
Ashland continues to develop overprint varnishes to meet the challenges this market is facing. Ashland's PureRad overprint varnishes offer improved adhesion to various inks coupled with high performance scratch and chemical resistance.

Ashland provides innovative technologies for surface and bonding enhancement for the packaging and converting industries. Ashland's extensive product line of pressure sensitive, flexible packaging, and laminating adhesives, heat seals, cold seals, UV/EB and water based overprint, print receptive and specialty coatings are formulated with focus on customer need, performance and innovation.
