Ashland expert to speak about safe flexible food packaging and risk assessment for the food industry at Pack Expo Las Vegas

DUBLIN, Ohio - As consumers become increasingly concerned about food safety they are engaging more frequently with retailers and food companies about food packaging. To help brand owners, packaging designers and converters prepare for these engagements, Joseph Spinnato, PhD, a regulatory compliance manager with Ashland Specialty Ingredients, a commercial unit of Ashland Inc. (NYSE: ASH), will provide insights on Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations and a more effective means for risk assessment in food packaging design and construction. Spinnato's presentation, "The Regulatory and Risk Landscape for Flexible Food Packaging," will take place Monday, September 28, at 10 a.m. at the Pack Expo show in the Las Vegas Convention Center.

"Food adulteration can jeopardize consumers' health and poses enormous financial risk to both food producers and packaging converters," said Spinnato. "In this presentation we will offer innovative ideas, backed by supporting data, to help producers and converters work toward minimizing their risk with techniques for conducting proper migration studies."

Spinnato will be available at Ashland's booth #S-7786 to answer specific questions following his presentation. Ashland's Adhesives team has extensive expertise working with printers and converters to recommend the best adhesive for specific applications and manufacturing processes. Ashland can conduct a risk-based assessment to determine if the packaging is fit for its intended use.

During the show Ashland will introduce Purelam A-9180/B-6050 two-part laminating adhesive, a solventless polyurethane system that is 100 percent solids and designed for paper-to-film laminations. It eliminates or minimizes dive-in on coated and uncoated paper, and helps eliminate or reduce moisture dependence during curing. Thus, converters may be able to eliminate misting bars, swamp heaters and high-humidity curing rooms.

The company will also showcase several other innovations for flexible packaging, including Purekote 23589, a water-based coating that delivers a super matte appearance with a velvety, soft touch feel. Pureseal 23519C is a water-based coating that when heat activated acts as a pressure sensitive adhesive to hold heat-shrink labels for yogurt cups and other similar food packaging in place during shrink process.
