Roger L. McMullen, PhD, Ashland principal scientist, awarded The US Society of Cosmetic Chemists (SCC) highest honor for exceptional technical contributions to the cosmetic industry

Wilmington, Del., November 28, 2023 - Ashland principal scientist, Roger J. McMullen, PhD, has been awarded The US Society of Cosmetic Chemists (SCC) highest honor for exceptional technical contributions to the cosmetic industry.

The Maison G. deNavarre Medal Award recognizes McMullen’s more than 40 publications in peer-reviewed journals and select textbooks, founding and editing the online magazine The Cosmetic Chemist, presenting at 11 SCC annual scientific meetings, nine TRI applied hair research conferences, five DWI hair conferences and five NYSCC symposia.

The Society’s highest honor is named after the founder and recognizes an individual for accomplishments in activity supporting the best interests of the cosmetic industry through technical contributions.  Patents, publications and technical presentations are considered when selecting a winner.

McMullen has over 25 years of experience in the personal care industry with specialties in optics, imaging, and spectroscopy of hair and skin. Currently, he leads the Material Science team in the Measurement Science department at Ashland.

McMullen received a B.S. in Chemistry from Saint Vincent College and completed his Ph.D. in Biophysical Chemistry from Seton Hall University. Roger is an Adjunct Professor at Fairleigh Dickinson University and teaches Biochemistry to students pursuing M.S. degrees in Cosmetic Science and Pharmaceutical Chemistry. ​

Prior to pursuing a career in science, McMullen served in the U.S. Navy for four years on board the USS YORKTOWN (CG 48). He is fluent in Spanish and Catalan.

McMullen will receive his award during the SCC’s 77th annual scientific meeting on December 12th during the President's Luncheon & Business Meeting at 12:45 PM at Sheraton NY Times Square.
